Overview

Learning Modules is a tool that provides course materials in a logical, sequential, order, guiding students through the content and assessments in the order specified by the instructor. Instructors can insert formatted text, files, weblinks, Discussion Topics, Assignments, Tests & Quizzes, and soon, Assessments. Content can be structured in such a way as to require students to complete content before they are allowed to proceed to the next content. It is also possible for instructors to set up a place for students to add content to the Learning Module.

NOTE: Any files and/or weblinks that you use in Learning Modules are stored in your course Resources. Best practice would be to organize the files and weblinks in Resources prior to building your Learning Modules. You may create folders in a structure that will allow you to easily locate the material in Resources that is being referenced by the Learning Modules tool. If you need to update a file, go to the Resources and "replace" the file that is there so that the link to the Learning Modules doesn't have to be relinked. If you do not organize your files and weblinks prior to building the Learning Modules, when you add files or weblinks in the Learning Module, a folder will be created for you in Resources called "Learning Module" and the content will be placed there. You may hide the Resources tool if you do not want students to view the files there, BUT you cannot hide individual files or folders in Resources. Hiding the file or folder will keep students from being able to view the content in the Learning Module. If you delete any content from Resources, it will also remove it from the Learning Modules.

There are three main ways to present the content:

Example 1 All Pages in one Learning Module and accessible to students at all times.

Example 2 All Pages in one Learning Module and students complete prior Subpage before proceeding to the next. Prior Subpages can be required or simply presented in that order. Screenshot-modules-in-lm.png

Example 3 Pages in the course toolbar. Each Page can be accessed after students have completed prior work or can be accessible to students at all times. Screenshot-modules-in-toolbar.png

When you first enter the Learning Modules tool, and every time you add a new Page, you will see some simple instructions and examples for use of the tools. As soon as you begin to add content, this information will be replaced with your content. If you want to see the instructions again, click Help at the top of the Learning Modules tool.

Add Subpage in Learning Modules

Adding Subpages is actually just adding another Page. We will continue to use the term "Page" to describe the space provided where you may add content. Think of Pages as ways to organize your content, sort of like a folder. Pages could be labeled "Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 . . ." or "Module 1, Module 2, Module 3 . . ." or "Baroque, Renaissance, Classical . . ." for example. The three images in the Overview of this tutorial shows examples of how more than one Page could be utilized in Learning Modules. The first and second examples can be created by using the "Add Subpage" option at the top of the Learning Modules tool.

To add a Page:

  1. Click Add Subpage at the top of the Learning Modules page.
  2. "Page title"- Type a title for the Page, such as "Module 2."
  3. If you want to add the Page to a different Page than the currently one, click Choose Existing Page. You will see a list of all pages. Of course this only applies to Learning Modules where more Pages have been created.
  4. Check the box beside "Next page, i.e. page replaced the current one rather than returning to the current one" if you want your Page to appear as Example 2 above.
