Turnitin Clarity

Overview

Turnitin Clarity is a student-writing tool that combines plagiarism detection with real-time AI writing assistance in an integrated composition space. Students write assignments within the platform while receiving AI-powered feedback, grammar suggestions, and citation help. Instructors gain visibility into the writing process through version history playback and comprehensive writing reports that track student progress, AI usage, and originality scores throughout the drafting process.

Clarity supports Canvas LTI 1.3 integration with grade pass back functionality, allowing instructors to create assignments with rubrics directly within Canvas and automatically sync grades.

This tool supports online asynchronous, online synchronous, hybrid, and in-person courses, and is best suited for small to medium class sizes (up to 100 students). Assignment creation set up is moderately complex and requires some initial training. For discussions, students could submit initial posts through Clarity's composition space and engage in peer review of writing reports. For quizzes, instructors could design short-answer or essay questions that utilize Clarity's writing feedback features to help students improve responses before final submission.

Regarding accessibility, it is advised that instructors discuss this tool throughout the semester with their students to ensure that none of them require accommodation to use it.

Clarity is currently in an extended pilot and available for faculty to enable it in their classes. The tool is a feature of the current Turnitin LTI in Canvas.
