Turnitin

Turnitin (TII) is most known for its online service comparing student assignment submissions to billions of websites and papers and generating a similarity report of exact matches. Instructors can then verify if students properly cited their sources.  The company also offers other products to help support a culture of robust academic integrity and to streamline feedback and grading of student work.

Turnitin tools at UF include:

  • Plagiarism Review (embedded in Canvas Online Assignment types): A streamlined similarity-only report from their Feedback Studio.

  • Turnitin LTI (for Canvas External Tool Assignment types): A full-featured interface which includes the similarity report from their Feedback Studio and:

    • PeerMark: A tool for students to peer review each other's submissions (limited to Standard assignment types within TII, not yet available with Clarity/Student Writing). Note: Not compatible with Group Sets, you should use Canvas Group Assignment and Peer Review instead.

    • GradeMark: Interactive grading rubrics and feedback tool (used in place of Speedgrader for all assignment types within TII, yet still automatically synchronized with your Canvas gradebook).

    • [Limited Pilot tool] Clarity/Student Writing: A modern, online word processor, infused with the Draft Coach features of Similarity, Citation, & Grammar reports as well as a proprietary AI chatbot, and a playback tool of the document’s evolution.

  • Gradescope (a separate LTI for Canvas External Tool Assignments, see its dedicated webpage for more information): A tool to facilitate more efficient and fair grading of paper-based assessments, programming assignments, and more.

  • iThenticate (a standalone website service, see its dedicated webpage for more information): A similarity report designed for researcher use before publication or grant writing submission (it does not store a repository of these submissions for future comparisons).

  • ExamSoft & Examplify (some Colleges have separate licensing for this product, see your local resource center): Similar to the Respondus products available to the entire UF community, the ExamSoft software is used for creating and analyzing tests, plus it has a student-facing lockdown application, Examplify, promoting academic integrity during test-taking.

  • Draft Coach™ (for Google Docs): A student-facing product providing immediate access to Similarity, Citation, & Grammar reports for awareness of potential issues prior to assignment submission.

Note: Creating an account directly on Turnitin’s webpage is not needed and is not permitted for security reasons. If you need to use Turnitin outside of Canvas eLearning, please submit a ticket for a standalone account.
